Kalpana Chawla was an American astronaut, engineer, and the first woman of Indian origin to go into space. She began working at NASA Ames Research Center where she did computational fluid dynamics research on vertical or short take-off & landing concepts. Kalpana first flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist. While traveling in the weightlessness of space, she said, "You are just your intelligence." She returned to space on the ill-fated STS-107 mission which broke up on re-entry over Texas in 2003. Kalpana has been awarded many honors posthumously, including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
