Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first African-American woman to become a Doctor of Medicine in the US in 1864. She primarily treated poor women and children, dedicating her life to their medical treatment and study. She published A Book of Medical Discourses in 1883, one of the first publications written by an African-American about medicine, and the only book written by a female physician in the 19th century. She paved the way for women in medicine.

    About the Artist:
Charlotte Tarlitz is an LA-based illustrator who has worked professionally for over a decade creating and directing art for video games and media on web and social platforms; as well as illustrating books, freelancing and drawing for merchandise design. Her clients have included Disney, Mattel, Hasbro, Spinmaster, Activision, Sanrio and Hard Rock Cafe. When not drawing, Charlotte can be found collecting keys, covering her apartment in plants, playing Warcraft and hanging out with her goldfish, Poppy. Find her at www.charshiedraws.com.
